MAKING A VIDEO 'SKETCHBOOK' ABOUT WATER

October 9th · Saturday · 9:30AM – 10:45AM (EDT)

Bring your smart phones and start making a film right away about the subject of water. Be inspired by some of the films made by our Here on Earth filmmakers last year and share ideas with each other across continents about what water means to you and how it enters your life.

Guest Speaker

RAY CHIN · A DOLPHIN'S SMILE

October 16th · Saturday · 9:30AM – 10:45AM (EDT)

Ray Chin, an Oceanographer, Cetacean photographer and environmental activist, is the winner of the London Natural History Museum’s 2017 Wildlife Photography of the Year People’s Choice for his image of a humpback whale and her calf. Filmmaking Workshop 2

INTERVIEW SKILLS · WHAT DOES THE WATER MEAN TO YOU? SPEACH & SOUND.

October 23rd · Saturday · 9:30AM – 10:45AM (EDT)

In this session we will talk about the backbone of most documentaries – the interview or voice over. We will talk about what water means to us in a group and get to know each other better in break out rooms where we will practice interview skills – all interviews will be uploaded to the shared ‘image bank’ for participants to use in their films.

We will also discuss the importance of sound – and a few examples will be shared. You will be encouraged to go on your own sound recording safari and upload your ‘water sounds’ to the shared ‘image bank’.

Guest Speaker

NICOLA WHITE · HOW FORAGING ON THE FORESHORE CAN REVEAL STORIES FROM THE PAST

October 30th · Saturday · 9:30AM – 10:45AM (EDT)

Nicola White is a British ‘Mudlark’ and artist whose work is inspired by found objects old and new picked up on her walks along the Thames foreshore. At low tide, many fragments of London’s rich and ancient history are revealed along the banks of the river. One of her other pastimes is hunting for messages in bottles and she now has quite a collection! Nicola will share the stories of some of her most interesting finds as well as some of her messages in bottles. www.tidelineart.com

Filmmaking Workshop 3

EDITING

November 6th · Saturday · 9:30AM – 10:45AM (EDT)

What is there to know about editing? How to bring a film to live with all the sounds and images you gather? In this workshop, we learn how to think and act like an editor. We will watch our tutor edit something live from the shared image bank – and encourage you to have a go.

Guest Speaker

DAVID HASSLER · COMMUNITY POEMS AND BUILDING A POETIC NARRATION FOR FILM

November 13th · Saturday · 9:30AM – 10:45AM (EDT)

David Hassler directs the Wick Poetry Center at Kent State University. In 2009, he co-founded Traveling Stanzas, a community arts project which creates illustrations in response to poems generated from community workshops in schools, healthcare facilities, libraries, senior centers, and veterans’ organizations. David Hassler will lead a writing workshop inspired by Ellen Bass’s poem, “Ode to the Fish.” As a poetic form, “odes” are praise poems that celebrate a person, place, or thing. Hassler will lead a discussion of Bass’s poem and generative writing exercises to help participants create their own praise poems to the ocean that can then be placed on the Here on Earth map.
